Newcastle United is nearing the successful completion of negotiations to sign the £25 million-rated La Liga star, ahead of Arsenal and Barcelona.

In their pursuit of goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol, Newcastle United is reportedly ready to outmaneuver Arsenal, FC Barcelona, and other teams.

Garcia has had an impressive breakout season in 2024/25, playing a crucial role in helping Espanyol secure their place in La Liga following their promotion in 2023/24. The 24-year-old is attracting attention from several top European clubs due to his £25m release clause, making him an appealing option for teams looking for a new goalkeeper.

Arsenal and Barcelona have both been linked with the Spaniard, and a report earlier this month suggested that a move to the Emirates was on the horizon. However, at Arsenal, Garcia would be facing competition from Spain international David Raya, who is currently the first-choice goalkeeper. Similarly, at Barcelona, he would find himself behind Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Garcia is viewed as a possible starter for Newcastle United next season, although the team is actively looking for a new first-choice goalkeeper. In their hunt, Burnley’s James Trafford is also mentioned.

When asked about his future at Espanyol earlier this month, Garcia was diplomatic: “I’m very calm. Many things are coming up and I want to rest now. These are things that don’t depend solely on me. I’m an Espanyol player; if something comes along that seems good to them and to me too, it will be decided. I’m focused on my feelings and those of the people I care about.”

Despite the strong interest from Arsenal and Barcelona, journalist Quique Iglesias from Cadena COPE has indicated that a move to the La Liga giants is unlikely. He reported that Garcia is “very likely to sign for Newcastle United in the coming days.”

Iglesias elaborated, saying, “He’s going to sign for a Premier League team, in principle. They say Newcastle United, but that will be resolved soon. But he’s not going to play at Barca. He believes he has to make a decision that’s good for everyone and for everyone he cares about; Espanyol matters to him.”

Furthermore, Iglesias explained that Garcia feels it’s not the right time to move to Barcelona, emphasizing that it’s a complex situation given Ter Stegen’s ongoing contract and stature within the team. “It’s not a natural or easy exit. It’s not a cheap exit for Barca. It’s not an exit where he’s guaranteed to play. And because… it’s not easy for Ter Stegen to leave. Things will be resolved soon.”

In short, Garcia is set to make his move, and it seems he will not be leaving Spain until circumstances align perfectly.
