Luis Diaz Stays Put—Liverpool Shuts Down Barcelona’s Transfer Hopes

Liverpool have rejected an approach from Barcelona to speak to forward Luis Diaz. Club sources informed BBC Sport that the Colombia international, who played a crucial role in helping Liverpool secure the Premier League title last season, is not for sale. The 28-year-old joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 and has a contract with the club until 2027. Diaz netted 13 goals and provided seven assists in the league, contributing to Liverpool winning the title by 10 points.

Interest in Luis Diaz was previously noted from Manchester City last summer, and he also has admirers in Saudi Arabia. “I’m very happy at Liverpool – I’ve always said so,” Luis Diaz stated while on international duty for his country’s matches against Peru and Argentina. “They’ve welcomed me very well. The transfer market is opening, and we’re trying to arrange what’s best for us. I’m waiting to see what happens. If Liverpool gives us a good extension or I have to see out my two-year contract, I’ll be happy. It all depends on them. I’m here to decide and see what’s best for us and the future.”

After Luis Diaz and his partner shared a string of long and emotional social media posts that many supporters interpreted as hinting to a possible exit, there was a great deal more conjecture about his future with Liverpool. Richard Hughes, the team’s sporting director, and Michael Edwards, the football chief executive of Fenway Sports Group, are both actively looking for methods to restructure Arne Slot’s team in the early days of the next transfer window. Their goal is to pinpoint and enhance key areas within the team, ensuring they maintain a strong competitive edge in both domestic leagues and European tournaments.

Recently, the Premier League champions secured the signing of Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5 million. Liverpool is also close to finalizing a club-record fee of £109 million for Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen and is in discussions to bring Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez in for between £45 million and £50 million.

Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will join the squad after being on loan at Valencia following his move to Liverpool last summer. In April, prolific forward Mohamed Salah quashed transfer rumors by signing a new two-year contract that keeps him at Anfield until 2027, while captain Virgil van Dijk followed suit later that month. Trent Alexander-Arnold has moved to Real Madrid one month before the end of his Liverpool contract, and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been sold to Brentford for an initial fee of £12.5 million. Striker Darwin Nunez has also been linked with potential moves to Saudi Arabian clubs as well as Barcelona.
