Barcelona Poised to Seal Nico Williams Signing Pending Laporta’s Approval

Joan Laporta will make the transfer saga involving Athletic Club’s winger Nico Williams and Barcelona has gained significant momentum recently. Reports from Friday indicate that Williams’ agent, Felix Tainta, met with Barcelona’s Director of Football, Deco, putting them in a strong position to secure his signature.

Just a few weeks ago, it seemed that Williams was off the radar for Barcelona. However, sources now suggest that the 22-year-old is eager to join the Catalan club this month. Despite this, as of Monday morning, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz was still being considered Barcelona’s top target, and President Joan Laporta has expressed some doubts about pursuing Williams this summer. There’s also the added desire from Lamine Yamal to team up with his Spain teammate at the club level.

On the other hand, Bayern Munich has been informed of Barcelona’s intentions regarding Williams. Florian Plettenberg from Sky Sports Deutschland reported that Barcelona is currently leading the chase to sign him. Earlier speculation suggested that Williams was contemplating either a move to Barcelona or a contract renewal with Athletic, but now it appears the Catalan club has pulled ahead of Bayern, Arsenal, and Chelsea in the race.

Joan Laporta is now evaluating whether the deal makes financial sense and if they can register Williams if they proceed with the signing. Meanwhile, Bayern manager Hansi Flick is said to be very keen on bringing Williams to Germany and has been alerted that Barcelona is in the driving seat. If they decide to make a move, it seems likely they could close the deal.

Flick has shown a keen interest in Williams, who is set to celebrate his 23rd birthday in July. The two have even had phone conversations to go over Flick’s plans for the upcoming season. However, like many situations with Barcelona, their financial circumstances will play a significant role in whether this transfer can happen.
