Anthony Elanga Joins Newcastle United: A Promising Acquisition
Anthony Elanga is set to become a Newcastle United player imminently, marking the culmination of a prolonged search for a right-winger following the club’s decision to pause their interest in Bryan Mbeumo. Newcastle is expected to pay an initial £55 million for Elanga, who was previously a target for Eddie Howe last summer.
To date, Newcastle hasn’t secured a right-winger during the PIF era at the club. Despite their efforts, Brentford star Mbeumo was deemed too pricey, leading the club to prioritize Elanga instead.
Here are the performances of the two players from the previous season:
Anthony Elanga’s stats Unlike Bryan Mbeumo, however
Both players distinguished themselves as outstanding right wingers in the Premier League during the 2024–2025 campaign. Even though Elanga has six goals compared to Mbeumo’s impressive 20 goals, Elanga contributed a disproportionately larger number of assists.
2024/25 Premier League Statistics
| Statistic | Anthony Elanga | Bryan Mbeumo |
|———————-|—————- |————— |
| Goals | 6 | 20 |
| Assists | 11 | 7 |
| Shots/90 | 1.2 | 2.2 |
| Dribbles/90 | 0.7 | 1.4 |
| Key passes/90 | 1.3 | 1.8 |
Even though Mbeumo performs better than Elanga in important measures per game, it’s important to remember that Elanga is still two years younger than his Brentford rival and has plenty of time to improve.
Both Elanga and Howe believe that under Newcastle United’s management, he can enhance his game further.
Eddie Howe: The Ideal Manager for Anthony Elanga
Eddie Howe has successfully transformed numerous Newcastle players since taking charge, so the prospect of working alongside him should excite Elanga. Under Howe, players like Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy have achieved career highs.
Howe’s ability to maximize right-wing potential suggests that Elanga’s signing is a wise choice. The £55 million investment can turn out to be a steal if Howe can bring out Elanga’s full potential, especially considering that he has previously proven his worth in the Premier League.
