Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the fitness of Declan Rice after the midfielder was forced off late in the Gunners’ midweek win over Brentford.
The England international, who has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers this season, appeared to pick up a calf issue during the closing stages at the Emirates Stadium and was substituted in the 83rd minute.
Rice’s availability for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa (12:30 pm kick-off) is now in doubt, potentially ending his run of starting every league game this campaign.
Arteta Gives Update on Rice’s Condition
Speaking after the Brentford match, Arteta admitted the initial signs were concerning, saying:
“Obviously, it’s never good news. Declan Rice had to come off. We don’t know — we have to see tomorrow what he’s got.”
Declan Rice later attempted to play down fears when speaking to reporters, insisting that he felt “fine” upon leaving the stadium. However, with a demanding schedule ahead, Arteta has remained cautious about rushing the 26-year-old back into action.
Addressing the media in his pre-match press conference on Friday, Arteta explained:
“Let’s see — we have another training session this afternoon. Every hour is going to be very important to see the availability of the players, so after that, we’ll decide who travels.”
While Arteta stopped short of confirming Rice’s participation, his comments suggest the midfielder could still be involved at Villa Park — though a late fitness test is likely to determine his inclusion.
Rice’s Importance to Arsenal
Since joining from West Ham in the summer, Declan Rice has become a vital cog in Arsenal’s midfield.
Saliba and Trossard Nearing Return
Arteta also provided positive updates on William Saliba and Leandro Trossard, confirming that both players are closing in on returns.
“It’s going to be a matter of days,” Arteta said.
Both players missed the midweek win over Brentford, with Saliba nursing a knock and Trossard sidelined by a calf issue. Their return would provide a timely boost to Arsenal’s squad depth amid a packed winter schedule.
However, Arteta did confirm that Cristhian Mosquera’s injury — sustained against Brentford — appears “more complicated” than initially feared, meaning the defender could face a longer spell on the sidelines.
Arteta on Arsenal’s Busy Schedule
The Arsenal boss also expressed frustration at the congested fixture list, which has seen his side play Chelsea on Sunday, Brentford on Wednesday, and Aston Villa on Saturday — all within six days.
“Every time you win a game, obviously you are a little bit closer to your objective and it’s the only thing we can do,” Arteta said. “We have to focus on performing, preparing really well for tomorrow. We know the kind of game we are going to play and we must be ready to fulfil our potential.”
A victory at Villa Park would temporarily move Arsenal clear at the top of the table and put pressure on their title rivals ahead of the weekend’s remaining fixtures.
