Several clubs throughout Europe are keeping an eye on Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is reportedly considering leaving AC Milan during the January transfer window in an effort to secure more playing time ahead of the World Cup next summer.
The 29-year-old midfield player, who moved to Milan from Chelsea in 2023, has been a valuable member of Massimiliano Allegri’s squad this season but has had difficulty securing a regular starting position. Despite his versatility and strong early-season form, Loftus-Cheek has found himself on the fringes of the first team following a busy summer of recruitment at San Siro.
The arrivals of Luka Modric, Adrien Rabiot, and Samuele Ricci have pushed the England international down the pecking order in Milan’s midfield. He started the Rossoneri’s first three Serie A games of the campaign but has made only one start in their last 11 league fixtures, often being used as a late substitute or deployed in unfamiliar positions.
Allegri has experimented with Ruben Loftus-Cheek in various roles this term — including a brief stint as part of a two-man attacking line in a 3-5-2 formation during Rafael Leao’s injury absence — but with Milan already eliminated from the Coppa Italia and not participating in European competition this season, his opportunities for minutes remain limited.
According to Calciomercato.com, the midfielder is now evaluating his options for January in order to strengthen his case for inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of the World Cup. Ruben Loftus-Cheek received his first national team call-up in over two years last October but risks losing that momentum if his lack of playing time continues.
There were also links with Lazio during the summer transfer window, and Premier League sides are said to have made “tentative enquiries,” while opportunities in the Bundesliga have not been ruled out either.
With Milan unlikely to stand in his way if a suitable offer arrives, Ruben Loftus-Cheek could be set for another move in January — one that might revive his hopes of representing England on the biggest stage once again.
