Aston Villa Still in Contention for Champions League Spot Next Season Despite Missing Top Five

Posted on

Aston Villa secured a significant victory over Bournemouth on Saturday evening in their pursuit of Champions League football. After facing a tough few weeks, where they were ousted from two cup competitions, Unai Emery’s side has now recorded consecutive 1-0 wins in the league, putting them in a promising position.

Ollie Watkins scored the game-winning goal in first-half stoppage time, but Villa held the lead at the Vitality Stadium until Jacob Ramsey was sent off with 10 minutes left. The match between Chelsea and Newcastle United on Sunday they will break their current 63-point stalemate at St. James’ Park.

Manchester City, who had been ahead of Villa and Forest, found themselves in a precarious position after losing to Southampton. Given the remaining games and the current rankings, it seems likely that either Villa or Forest will finish in sixth place, which might still lead to a Champions League berth the following season. This is due to Blue-Co’s ownership ties with both Chelsea and Strasbourg, with the latter currently aiming for a Champions League spot as they sit fifth and eye a top-four finish that could grant them at least a play-off match.

UEFA previously restricted clubs under common ownership from competing in European competitions together, but rules have been altered to allow them to compete in different competitions, with each case evaluated individually. This season, Manchester City and Manchester United have faced scrutiny in this area, yet UEFA approved their participation alongside Girona and Nice, respectively.

In order to maintain a distinct division of functions, UEFA has made it clear that two clubs owned by the same person cannot share management or direct influence in competitions. Luckily for Strasbourg and Chelsea, the latter has its own president and board, as well as autonomous decision-making. Although it’s a long shot for Villa to qualify through this avenue, it remains a possibility, especially with both teams capable of securing strong finishes.
