Bernardo Silva has admitted that his Manchester City future remains unresolved, with his contract at the Etihad Stadium set to expire at the end of the current season.
The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder will be free to enter pre-contract negotiations with foreign clubs from January if no new deal is agreed, placing City in a potentially difficult position as they look to secure one of their longest-serving stars.
Now entering his ninth campaign in Manchester, Silva has been a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s era of dominance, helping the club to five Premier League titles, a Champions League, and a historic Treble last year. Yet, despite his success, the playmaker has repeatedly hinted at a desire for a new challenge away from England.
Speaking to DAZN Portugal, Silva confessed that the coming months could be decisive.
“It’s my last year of contract. It is still to be seen what will happen,” he said. “But regardless of what happens, it’s always an honour to play for this club. After so many years here, being one of the most experienced players, I feel it’s my duty to share that experience with the younger ones and help them grow.”
The midfielder’s comments come amid renewed speculation linking him with a romantic return to boyhood club Benfica, while clubs in Spain and France are also monitoring the situation closely.
Guardiola, meanwhile, was typically diplomatic when asked about Silva’s future, insisting that the decision ultimately rests with the player and the club.
“I want the best for Bernardo Silva,” said the City boss. “If he wants to stay, I’ll be more than delighted. But I don’t talk about that subject with him. He’s been here for nine years already and he will decide with the club what is best for him and his family.”
The Catalan coach went on to praise Silva’s intelligence and resilience, describing him as “one of the most clever players” he has ever managed.
“His understanding of space, tempo, when to accelerate or slow the game, it’s extraordinary,” Guardiola explained. “Last season he was exhausted, mentally and physically, but he never stopped fighting. That’s why he’s our captain — because in the bad moments, he was always there.”
Silva, who was rested for the Champions League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in midweek, is expected to return to action when City host Leeds United at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon.
