Chelsea 2-0 LAFC: Enzo Maresca’s Blues Secure Club World Cup Win Amid Sparse Crowd

Chelsea kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over LAFC, an MLS team, at the mostly empty Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Despite the team’s strong performance, ticket sales were reportedly sluggish, leading to an official attendance of just 22,137 in a venue that can accommodate 71,000 spectators. The match showcased Chelsea’s depth and determination as they aimed for success on the world stage. The match saw Pedro Neto score the opening goal for Enzo Maresca’s side in the 34th minute, providing a lift for the Blues.

Despite the disappointing crowd, Chelsea fans were particularly eager to see new £30 million signing Liam Delap make his debut midway through the second half. Delap made an immediate impact, assisting Enzo Fernandez for Chelsea’s second goal as they secured a solid start in Group D.

Stadium less than one-third full for Chelsea’s opening CWC game
The attendance for Chelsea’s first Club World Cup match against LAFC, at just 22,137, meant the stadium was less than a third full. Pre-match expectations had estimated around 26,000 fans would show up. The game took place on a Monday afternoon at 3 PM, which might have influenced turnout, especially considering that Los Angeles is over 2,000 miles away from Atlanta.

Chelsea previously attracted over 70,000 supporters at the same venue when they faced Newcastle in July 2023 during a Premier League pre-season tournament.

Blues boss Enzo Maresca reflected positively on the match, stating, “Very good result. At this stage of the season, it’s also normal to manage different kinds of things. Overall, I think the performance has been good and we won the game.”

Delap impresses on Chelsea debut
Chelsea faced difficulties in breaking down former Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris, who demonstrated remarkable skill with saves against both Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke. Nonetheless, Maresca’s side maintained dominance in possession and successfully found the net in the 34th minute. Neto beat the offside trap, took advantage of Jackson’s pinpoint pass, and slotted the ball into the corner of the net.

Chelsea worked diligently for their second goal, which showcased Delap’s potential. The striker combined nicely with Cole Palmer, displaying skill on the byline, even though his next pass was cleared. The elusive second goal arrived in the 79th minute when Delap sent a ball into the middle of the box, allowing Fernandez to tap in and seal the victory.

Maresca: Delap understands our style
Enzo Maresca commented on Liam Delap’s debut, noting, “The good thing about Liam is that he knows the way we want to play, so the process is quite quick. We also gave a chance to Dario Essugo, who is another new player—good for both of them.”

Delap: Embracing competition with Jackson
With both Jackson and Delap earning assists against LAFC, the competition for the starting striker spot has intensified.

“I want to score some goals, but it’s really important to help the team,” he continued. I’m so excited to be here and to play my first game and contribute. It’s a good feeling. They’ve welcomed me really well. I’ve only had a few sessions here, but I can’t wait for even more.”
