Chelsea have finalized the signing of winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £48.5 million, with the potential for an additional £3.5 million in performance-related add-ons.

The 20-year-old attacker, who made the move to Dortmund from Manchester City in 2020, has committed to a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, becoming the latest addition in what has already been a busy summer for the club.

Gittens made 107 appearances for the German squad, scoring 17 goals and providing 14 assists. Ultimately, he chose to join Chelsea despite interest from other Premier League teams, including Arsenal and Tottenham.

To make a significant impact in the Premier League title race and the Champions League next season, Chelsea has already signed Strasbourg defender Mamadou Sarr, Brighton & Hove Albion forward Joao Pedro, Sporting CP midfielder Dario Essugo, and Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap this summer.

Although Gittens won’t be available to play until after the Club World Cup, he expressed his excitement about the move, describing it as an “amazing feeling.”

Dortmund confirmed that a deal had been agreed upon on Thursday, with sporting director Sebastien Kehl stating that discussions with the Premier League side were “challenging” but that they were ultimately “pleased” with the outcome.

“Jamie is an outstanding player who has brought us a great deal of joy,” Kehl noted. “He now wishes to take the next step in his career at Chelsea, and we wish him all the best and much success.”

Reflecting on his Premier League ‘dream,’ Gittens has represented England at various youth levels, including the Under-21 squad, although he has not yet made his senior debut.

The highly-rated attacker spent time at Chelsea’s academy in his youth, though he spent the majority of his development at Reading.

After the transfer, Gittens spoke to the club’s official website, stating, “It feels very full circle. I was at Chelsea when I was at Under-8 or Under-9 level. I wasn’t there for long, but I remember the excitement of going back to Chelsea after school for training. It was a great feeling.”

He added, “I remember playing for Reading and Manchester City and facing Chelsea in the youth leagues, so returning to Cobham as a Chelsea player is really special. It’s my dream to shine in the Premier League. Watching it from Germany, I’ve seen how intense the league is, where every match is a battle, and I’m ready to take on that challenge. I’m thrilled to join a team with a winning mentality, which is incredibly important.”

Gittens concluded, “I want to keep improving, both as a player and a person. I strive to be more consistent and continue my learning. Joining a big club like Chelsea is a remarkable feeling, and I look forward to learning from everyone in the team and pushing myself to the max.”
