Daniel Levy Departs, But Spurs Ownership Remains Firm

Tottenham’s owners have reaffirmed their long-term commitment to the club following the departure of executive chairman Daniel Levy, despite fresh speculation that his exit could pave the way for a potential sale.

Daniel Levy, who had been at the helm for nearly 25 years, stepped down on Thursday at the request of the Lewis family trust, which controls the club’s ownership. The family felt a change was overdue at the top, believing new leadership could provide the spark needed to drive greater success on the pitch.

The timing of Levy’s exit immediately prompted rumours of a takeover, but sources close to the Lewis family have stressed that while they remain open to external investment, a full sale of the club is not on the table at present.

Instead, the focus is on rebuilding and delivering results after a turbulent campaign. Tottenham endured a disastrous domestic season, finishing 17th in the Premier League, though they salvaged some pride with Europa League glory. The ownership believes recent appointments represent the foundation of a “new era” for the club.

Earlier this year, Vinai Venkatesham, formerly of Arsenal, was installed as chief executive, and in recent weeks, banking veteran Peter Charrington was appointed non-executive chairman. Together with new head coach Thomas Frank, they form a leadership structure the Lewis family hopes will restore competitiveness and consistency.

“Generations of the Lewis family support this special football club and they want what the fans want – more wins more often,” a source close to the family said. “This is why you have seen recent changes, new leadership and a fresh approach. In Vinai, Thomas and Peter, they believe they are backing the right team to deliver on this. This is a new era.”

Behind the scenes, the family commissioned U.S. consultancy firm the Gibb River Group to conduct a wide-ranging review of the club’s operations. While not the sole factor behind Levy’s departure, the review is said to have reinforced the belief that Tottenham required a professional CEO with proven experience to modernize structures and strengthen the business side of the club.

Daniel Levy departure marks the end of an era. He was instrumental in the building of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and oversaw the club’s rise into Champions League contention during Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure.

The Lewis family will now hope that fresh leadership can help turn the page and set Tottenham back on the path toward sustained success, both in England and in Europe.
