Emiliano Martinez on Inter Milan’s Radar Ahead of Transfer Window

Posted on

Cristian Chivu’s Inter Milan are reportedly preparing an ambitious bid to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez as they seek to reinforce their goalkeeping department ahead of the 2026 season.

The Argentine World Cup winner’s future has been a major talking point for months. Martínez came close to leaving Villa Park during the summer but ultimately stayed after a potential switch failed to materialize. Now, speculation surrounding his next move has reignited — and a move to Italy could finally be on the horizon.

Inter Identify Emiliano Martínez as Sommer Successor

According to Fichajes, Inter Milan have set their sights on Martínez as a long-term successor to Yann Sommer, whose contract at San Siro expires at the end of the current campaign.

Head coach Cristian Chivu and the club’s sporting department reportedly view the Aston Villa man as the ideal candidate to take over between the posts. Inter are said to be working “quietly but decisively” to put together a deal in the January transfer window, though the move could also be lined up for the summer if Villa hold firm mid-season.

The Nerazzurri are seeking a commanding, experienced goalkeeper capable of leading from the back — qualities that Martínez has consistently demonstrated both in the Premier League and on the international stage with Argentina.

However, after four successful years in Birmingham, the 33-year-old appears eager for a new challenge. Sources close to the player have suggested he wants to test himself at a club regularly competing for major European honours.

Emiliano Martínez was close to sealing a high-profile move to Manchester United last summer, but the Red Devils opted to sign Senne Lammens instead. While he remains under contract at Villa until 2028, the Argentine has not hidden his ambition to take the next step in his career.

Villa Open to Sale — at the Right Price

Villa are understood to be aware of Martínez’s desire to move on and could sanction a transfer if they secure an adequate replacement. With the club’s sporting project under Unai Emery still in development, losing such an influential figure would be a significant blow — but a sizeable offer could tempt them to negotiate.

For Inter, Martínez represents not just a stopgap but a potential upgrade on Sommer. The Italian club’s backup goalkeeper Josep Martínez has yet to convince in limited opportunities, prompting the Nerazzurri to accelerate their search for a proven No. 1.
