Federico Valverde Shuts Down Rumors of Champions League Rift with Xabi Alonso

Federico Valverde has strongly denied suggestions that he refused to play for Real Madrid in their Champions League win over Kairat on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old midfielder was left as an unused substitute in Madrid’s 5-0 victory in Kazakhstan, sparking speculation after he appeared distant during the warm-up and avoided joining the traditional pre-match rondo. Cameras also caught him standing alone during the second half while teammates Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga prepared to come on, leading to reports that Valverde had turned down the chance to play out of position at right-back.

Speaking before the match, Federico Valverde had admitted his discomfort at being asked to fill in defensively. “I wasn’t born to play as a full-back,” he said when quizzed about covering for the injured Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold. That remark, combined with his absence from the pitch, fueled rumors that he had rejected his manager’s instructions.

But on Wednesday, Federico Valverde hit back with a heartfelt statement, insisting his commitment to the club has never wavered.

“I’ve read several articles that are damaging to me. I know I’ve had bad games; I’m aware of that. I’m truly sad. They can say many things about me, but under no circumstances can they say that I refuse to play.”

Federico Valverde reminded fans of his history of sacrifice, revealing that he has often played through injuries without complaint.

“I’ve given everything and more for this club. I’ve played through fractures and injuries, and I’ve never complained or asked for a break. I have a good relationship with the coach, which makes me feel confident in telling him which position I like most on the field, but I’ve always let him know I’m available to perform anywhere, on any trip, and in every game.”

The Uruguayan closed with a passionate pledge to continue fighting for his place:

“I’ve put my heart and soul into this club and I will continue to do so, even though sometimes it’s not enough or I’m not playing as I would like. I swear on my pride that I will never give up and I will fight until the end, playing wherever I am.”

Federico Valverde remains one of Madrid’s most versatile midfielders, valued for his energy and adaptability. While speculation about his role continues, his message leaves no doubt about his loyalty to the club.
