Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will square off in the eagerly awaited Club World Cup final on Sunday at the MetLife Stadium, which is situated just outside of New York City. The match is set to kick off at 3:00 pm local time (1900 GMT), with forecasts predicting that temperatures could soar to 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) by that time.

Chelsea had previously experienced the challenging conditions during their semi-final match against Brazilian side Fluminense, which they won 2-0 on Tuesday, where similar heat was also a factor. The tournament’s tempo and flow have been significantly impacted by the intense heat in a few of the matches.

Given these circumstances, there are serious questions about how the World Cup, which will be held in North America the following year, will be scheduled. Fernandez expressed his worries: “Playing in these high temperatures poses serious risks to the players’ health and safety. It’s not just difficult for us athletes; it also impacts the fans in attendance and those watching from home.”

He elaborated, “The pace of play is noticeably different; the heat slows everything down, reducing the quality of the spectacle for everyone involved.” With a forward-looking perspective on the upcoming 2026 tournament, Fernandez added, “I truly hope the organizers reconsider the kick-off times to enhance the viewing experience and create a more enjoyable environment for fans.” As a World Cup champion with Argentina in 2022, he understands the importance of delivering an exciting show while ensuring player safety.
