Teams Ready as FIBA Women’s Basketball League Asia Returns to China

BEIRUT (Lebanon) – The FIBA Regional Office-Asia has confirmed that China will once again host the FIBA Women’s Basketball League Asia (WBLA), with the 2025 edition set for September 23–28 in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. This will be the second consecutive year the tournament takes place in China, following a successful debut in Chengdu last year.

The Dongguan Sports Centre, a venue that hosted games during the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, will welcome six top clubs from across Asia: China, Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Mongolia, and Saudi Arabia. The expanded lineup, up from four teams in 2024, reflects the growing popularity and depth of women’s basketball in the region.

Defending champions Sichuan Yuanda Meile Basketball Club will return, aiming to repeat their thrilling 74–69 title win over Japan’s Fujitsu Red Wave in last year’s final, where Han Xu earned MVP honors. Both finalists will face new challengers, including:

  • Dongguan New Century – reigning Women’s Chinese Basketball Association champions
  • Busan BNK Sum – 2024–25 Women’s Korean Basketball League champions
  • Ulaanbaatar Amazons – Mongolian league champions
  • Al Ula Club – first-ever WBLA representative from the Gulf Region

The competition format will see teams split into two groups based on the FIBA World Ranking for Women, presented by NIKE. After a single round-robin group phase, the top two teams in each group will progress to the semi-finals. The winners will meet in a one-game championship final, while the losing semi-finalists will play for third place. Third-placed group teams will contest a fifth-place classification game.

Full schedules and match times will be released soon, but the stage is already set for a week of high-level competition showcasing some of the region’s finest talent.

If you want, I can also prepare a tournament preview table showing the six teams, their home countries, and last season’s results, so it’s visually quick for readers to scan. That could make the story even more engaging.
