Frenkie de Jong Signs Contract Extension with Barcelona Until 2029

After months of speculation about his future, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has formally signed a new long-term contract that will keep him with the Catalan team until 2029.

The Dutch international, who reportedly paid €75 million to join Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, has established himself as a mainstay in the midfield. Frenkie De Jong has made 267 appearances since joining the team, helping them win six major trophies, including two La Liga titles, while contributing 19 goals and 24 assists.

Even though the renewal was delayed, an agreement was eventually reached.

The contract renewal was delayed, according to Spanish reports, because of problems with De Jong’s former agent, Ali Dursun, who allegedly advised the midfielder against changing representation.

Negotiations eventually resumed under De Jong’s new agent, Sebastian Ledure, who was able to seal the deal. The 28-year-old midfielder signed his contract in the presence of Barcelona president Joan Laporta, sporting director Deco, and other senior club officials at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.

Frenkie De Jong: “I Want to Stay at Barcelona as Long as Possible”

Speaking after putting pen to paper, De Jong expressed his delight at extending his stay with the club he grew up admiring.

“As I’ve always said, since I was a child, I dreamed of playing for Barcelona — and now that I’m living this dream, I want to stay here as long as possible and win many titles with this club,” De Jong told GOAL.

“I haven’t yet won the Champions League with Barcelona, and that’s a big goal for me and the team. We also want to win more league titles, cups, and the Super Cup. We’ll do everything we can to achieve that.”

The Dutchman also praised new head coach Hansi Flick for his belief and trust.

“My relationship with the manager has been good from the first moment. He’s shown faith in me, and I’ll keep working hard to improve.”

What’s Next for Barcelona?

Following the international break, De Jong and Barcelona will return to action on October 18, when they host Girona at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in La Liga.

De Jong’s renewal provides a major boost for Barcelona’s long-term project under Flick, as the club continues to prioritize stability and leadership within its squad.
