In a recent match, Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham found himself responding to Minnesota United’s celebrations on social media after they defeated Miami 4-1. The defeat marked a significant moment for global star Lionel Messi, who experienced his heaviest loss since joining the MLS two years ago.
Minnesota United humorously referenced Miami’s pink uniform and Chappell Roan’s song “Pink Pony Club” on Instagram as they celebrated the game. “Pink Phony Club,” the caption, was clearly intended to mock their opponents while highlighting the fact that they were one point ahead of Miami in fifth place in the standings.
Beckham, visibly irritated by the comments, voiced his opinion in the comments section, stating, “Show a little respect mnufc be elegant in triumph.” He further engaged with Minnesota’s content, responding to another post that proclaimed “49 years and counting” with a banner saying “History over hype. Culture over cash.” Beckham commented, “respect over everything,” punctuated with a pink heart emoji.
Inter Miami was established in 2018 and had their inaugural season in 2020. They found success by clinching the Leagues Cup in 2023, coinciding with Messi’s first season with the club. Last season, they topped the regular season standings to win the Supporters’ Shield but faced an early exit from the playoffs against Atlanta United.
At present, Miami sits fourth in the Eastern Conference and sixth overall after the loss to Minnesota, who are thriving under coach Eric Ramsay in his second season. Ramsay, who took the reins in February 2024 after leaving his position at Manchester United, emphasized the importance of the victory over Miami, stating, “We’re obviously in a good place at the moment but we’ve got to keep that going.”
Looking ahead, Minnesota will face the Houston Dynamo, while Miami will go up against the San Jose Earthquakes. Miami is also preparing for the FIFA Club World Cup this summer, aiming to make a significant impact on the global stage.
