Jamie Carragher Reveals Who He Believes Is Premier League’s No.1
Jamie Carragher has labelled Arsenal the “best team” in the Premier League so far this season, following Liverpool’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday — a result that widened the gap between the champions and this year’s frontrunners.
The loss at the Etihad leaves Arne Slot’s side eight points adrift of the Gunners after suffering their fifth defeat in just 11 league games. City, meanwhile, have closed the gap on Mikel Arteta’s team to four points and appear primed to mount yet another title challenge.
Jamie Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, praised Arsenal’s all-round play but warned that familiar nerves could creep in as the season progresses.
“I still think Arsenal are the best team I’ve seen in the league this season — no doubt,” the Liverpool legend said. “But there’s a long way to go, and because Arsenal haven’t won the league for so long, the supporters, the players, and the manager will all get a bit twitchy if things get tight in the second half of the season.”
Jamie Carragher also pointed out that Manchester City’s dominance over Liverpool at the weekend — and their history of reeling Arsenal in — will weigh heavily on the Gunners’ minds.
“I think Arsenal will be nervous because it’s Man City, and they’ve done this to them twice before,” he continued. “Twice in the last three years, City have come from behind and caught Arsenal. The way City played today, especially that first-half performance, was incredible. Liverpool are the champions, and City absolutely took them to the cleaners.”
Arsenal had earlier dropped two points in a frustrating 1-1 draw away to Sunderland, conceding a stoppage-time equaliser against the newly-promoted side. Carragher believes that, while Arsenal remain top, the manner of City’s performance could spark anxiety in North London.
“They’d have been hoping for a draw [between City and Liverpool], but City didn’t just win — they dominated. That’ll bring back memories of what’s happened before,” he said. “It might be a long couple of weeks for Arsenal fans thinking about it.”
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk remains defiant despite the setback, insisting: “We’re not going to give up whatsoever. It’s a long season and we’re ready for the fight.”
Arsenal next host Tottenham in a fiery North London derby, while City travel to Newcastle United looking to keep the pressure on.
