Millie Bright Withdraws from England’s Euro 2025 Squad Due to Health Concerns

England have faced another significant setback in their quest to defend the European Championship title this summer, as vice-captain Millie Bright has withdrawn from the tournament in Switzerland next month, just as Sarina Wiegman was preparing to announce her final 23-player squad. Millie Bright explained her decision, stating that it “is the right thing for my health and my future.” It’s clear that her teammates have rallied around her, supporting her choice to prioritize her mental and physical well-being. This news comes shortly after the retirements of Mary Earps and Fran Kirby from international football. All three players played pivotal roles in England’s success at Euro 2022, alongside others like Rachel Daly, who retired last year, and Ellen White, who also stepped away following that triumph. This leaves only six players from that historic starting lineup available for the upcoming tournament.

Millie Bright “I’ve faced one of the hardest decisions of my career, but after careful consideration and conversations with my team, I’ve decided to withdraw from selection for the England squad ahead of Euro 2025,” Bright shared on Instagram. “Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honor. While my pride tells me to continue, I believe the team and fans deserve more. Right now, I’m unable to give my all, mentally or physically.”

Millie Bright emphasized the need to step back for her health and to allow another player the opportunity to contribute fully. The 31-year-old has earned 88 caps and netted six international goals, having recently withdrawn from England’s Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain to focus on her recovery. She mentioned on the Daly Brightness podcast that prioritizing her mental health and giving her body time to rest were essential. She just guided Chelsea to a triple crown at home.

Following recent games against Portugal and Spain, three important players—Alex Greenwood, Georgia Stanway, and Lauren Hemp—who had been sidelined for some time due to knee issues are now playing well. This is wonderful news for Wiegman.Greenwood’s return will be especially welcomed, as she can fill the centre-back position vacated by Millie Bright this summer.

Wiegman also hinted that Chelsea forward Lauren James is expected to be included in the team on Thursday, expressing hope about her recuperation from a hamstring injury. But with Kirby retired, Wiegman still has a lot of decisions to make, especially in regards to the midfield backup. She may prefer Aston Villa’s Missy Bo Kearns, who debuted against Spain, but Laura Blindkilde Brown is also in the mix, alongside Brighton’s Maisie Symonds, who received her first senior call-up in March. It seems there will only be space for one among this promising trio in Wiegman’s final 23.

England will kick off their Euro 2025 campaign against France on July 5, followed by Group D matches versus the Netherlands and Wales.
