Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly has been called up to the England senior squad for the first time after Reece James was forced to withdraw through injury.
The Chelsea captain had only recently returned to full fitness and re-established himself as a key figure under Thomas Tuchel, but a fresh setback means he will miss England’s October internationals against Wales and Latvia. His absence leaves Tuchel short of defensive options, particularly in the full-back positions, where injuries have piled up in recent weeks.
For O’Reilly, however, the news marks a major personal milestone. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks at Manchester City and was promoted from the England Under-21s after impressing the national setup with his creativity, work rate, and composure on the ball.
Having signed a new five-year contract earlier this year to stay at his boyhood club, O’Reilly’s commitment and performances have caught the attention of England’s coaching staff. Tuchel, who has followed the youngster closely, believes his versatility and football intelligence could offer something different in midfield as England look to maintain momentum in their qualification campaign.
With several full-backs unavailable — including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tino Livramento — Tuchel has opted for flexibility rather than recalling experienced veterans such as Kyle Walker or Luke Shaw. The current squad still features Djed Spence and Myles Lewis-Skelly as the only natural full-backs, though Dan Burn, Ezri Konsa, and John Stones are all capable of filling in if required.
O’Reilly’s promotion to the senior team underscores the faith England’s management has in the next generation. His technical ability, vision, and confidence in tight spaces have earned comparisons to former City star Phil Foden, and many inside the England camp believe he has the temperament to make the step up seamlessly.
As for Reece James, the hope is that his injury is not long-term. The 24-year-old has endured a frustrating run of fitness issues over the past two seasons, and both Chelsea and England will be eager to see him return to full health as quickly as possible.
For now, though, the spotlight falls on Nico O’Reilly — England’s newest debutant and one of the brightest young prospects in English football.
