Premier League Releases Full VAR Audio from Arsenal Controversy

The Premier League has released behind-the-scenes audio that sheds light on one of the weekend’s most heated debates: the decision to overturn Arsenal’s early penalty against Newcastle.

In Sunday’s clash at the Emirates, Viktor Gyökeres went down under a challenge from Nick Pope, prompting referee Jarred Gillett to point to the spot. But after a lengthy VAR check, the call was reversed – a moment that left Mikel Arteta and Bukayo Saka furious, especially when Newcastle went on to score moments later.

The newly released audio, featured on Match Officials Mic’d Up with PGMOL chief Howard Webb, shows how VAR Darren England and his team came to their conclusion.

From Stockley Park, England immediately queried whether Pope had touched the ball:

“Does he get a touch on the ball? I think he does… touches the ball first, then there’s contact afterwards. Therefore, that’s not a penalty kick.”

Assistant VAR Steven Meredith agreed, confirming a “secondary touch” from Pope’s right foot. After several slow-motion and full-speed replays were reviewed, Gillett was advised to check the pitchside monitor.

Gillett initially hesitated, remarking: “The attacker plays the ball first. I don’t know if the goalkeeper actually plays the ball.” But on closer inspection, he concluded:

“I’m seeing the goalkeeper get a toe to the ball first, prior to making contact… after a review, the goalkeeper plays the ball, there’s no foul. Final decision – we drop ball.”

Webb backed the officials, explaining:

“The referee hadn’t recognised that touch, that was important. The VAR saw it and deemed it a clear error. The referee could then review the full sequence, see that touch, and correctly cancel the penalty.”

Arsenal ultimately rallied to win 2-1 with a dramatic Gabriel Magalhães strike in stoppage time. But the fallout over the penalty decision shows no signs of quieting, with many Gunners supporters still questioning whether the right call was made.
