Raphael Guerreiro Injury Confirmed: Bayern Forced to Reshuffle for Chelsea Showdown

Bayern Munich preparations for their Champions League opener against Chelsea have taken a hit, with Raphael Guerreiro ruled out through injury.

Vincent Kompany’s side begin their European campaign on Wednesday night at the Allianz Arena, welcoming Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea in the first round of fixtures under the competition’s new league-phase format.

Both teams head into the clash in contrasting moods. Chelsea were left frustrated at the weekend, drawing 2–2 with Brentford in the Premier League after surrendering a late equalizer. Bayern, meanwhile, looked ruthless in their 5–0 Bundesliga win over Hamburg, but their celebrations were short-lived after Guerreiro’s early withdrawal sparked concern.

The Portuguese left-back came on as a substitute against Hamburg but lasted just 17 minutes before being replaced by youngster Tom Bischof. Speaking after the match, Kompany admitted the situation was worrying.

“Raphael Guerreiro felt something in his ribs,” the Bayern boss explained. “He went straight for an MRI, and we’ll know later what it is. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious.”

Unfortunately for Bayern, the scans revealed a stomach muscle issue, with the club confirming on Monday that Raphael Guerreiro would play no part against Chelsea. “Raphael Guerreiro suffered a slight injury to his stomach muscles in Bayern’s Bundesliga game against Hamburg, as confirmed by the club’s medical department. As a result, the 31-year-old Portugal international is set for a spell on the sidelines,” a statement read.

Chelsea Boost from UEFA Rule Change

While Bayern lose a key player, Chelsea arrive in Munich with a small stroke of fortune thanks to a new UEFA rule. The governing body recently approved an amendment allowing clubs to make one temporary squad change during the league phase if a player suffers a long-term injury.

Maresca’s side have taken advantage, swapping out teenager Dario Essugo for summer signing Facundo Buonanotte in their 23-man squad. It’s a timely boost for Chelsea, who will be keen to rotate intelligently across a grueling fixture schedule.

UEFA explained the reasoning earlier this month: “The adaptation is to ensure that squad lists are not unfairly reduced and players are safeguarded from additional workload pressure.”

All Eyes on Munich

The stage is set for a fascinating contest. Bayern, fresh off a confidence-boosting league win, will look to assert themselves at home despite their injury setback.

Kick-off at the Allianz Arena is at 20:00 UK time on Wednesday night, and both sides know that a strong start could prove vital in this new-look Champions League format.
