Rob Edwards Set for Wolves Job as Club Cancels Scheduled Press Conference

Rob Edwards’ position as Middlesbrough head coach is hanging in the balance after his scheduled pre-match press conference was abruptly cancelled on Friday afternoon — a move that has only intensified speculation linking him with the vacant Wolves job.

The 41-year-old is understood to be Wolves’ top target to replace Vitor Pereira, who was dismissed last weekend following a winless start to the Premier League campaign. However, Middlesbrough have so far resisted the Premier League club’s advances, rejecting Wolves’ initial request to speak with Edwards earlier this week.

Despite Boro’s firm stance, uncertainty around the head coach’s future grew significantly when Friday’s media briefing — set for 1pm at the club’s Rockliffe training base — was called off at short notice. The decision, officially attributed to “unforeseen circumstances,” came amid reports that talks between Edwards and the club’s hierarchy were ongoing behind closed doors.

As things stand, it remains unclear who will take charge of Boro’s Championship clash with Birmingham City at the Riverside on Saturday. While Edwards has yet to resign, the chances of him being in the dugout appear increasingly remote.

Sources in the Midlands suggest that Rob Edwards is open to returning to Molineux, where he spent several years as both a player and a coach earlier in his career. His family still lives in the area, and the prospect of leading Wolves — a Premier League side with familiar surroundings — is believed to be appealing.

Nevertheless, Rob Edwards only signed a three-year deal with Middlesbrough four months ago after joining from Luton Town, and any departure would require Wolves to pay a significant compensation fee. Boro had been confident that their manager was committed to his project on Teesside, but recent developments have cast serious doubt on that belief.

Friday’s cancelled press conference was seen by many as a missed opportunity for Edwards to publicly quash the speculation if there was no substance to it. Instead, silence from both the club and the manager has only fuelled the narrative that a departure may be imminent.

Should Rob Edwards leave, Boro will once again be forced to embark on an unwanted managerial search just months into the new season — a scenario that could disrupt the club’s early momentum in their bid for promotion.
