Feyenoord boss Robin van Persie has admitted his side are underdogs going into Thursday night’s Europa League showdown with Aston Villa — but insists they will give everything to cause an upset in Rotterdam.
The former Arsenal and Manchester United striker has overseen a strong start to the domestic campaign, with Feyenoord winning six of their first seven Eredivisie matches to sit top of the table. But Europe has been less forgiving, with defeat to Fenerbahce in the Champions League qualifiers followed by a 1-0 reverse in their Europa League opener, when Robin Van Persie rotated heavily.
Now, against Unai Emery’s Villa, Robin Van Persie knows the challenge is even greater.
“Aston Villa is obviously a fantastic team with a fantastic manager,” he said. “That’s beyond doubt. They’re super fit and play very structured. I think we are too. Based on that, it won’t be a chaotic match. I think it could be a very good match at first glance.
“In my opinion, they’re definitely the favorites. That’s logical when you’re talking about a top team in the Premier League. Aston Villa are the absolute favorites. They live in a different world in terms of budget and wages.
“But that’s no reason we won’t do everything we can to win. Being favorites doesn’t count when those guys put their boots on. I think we also have some really good players and a good manager!”
Feyenoord will be boosted by the return of captain Sam Steijn after injury, while defender Anel Ahmedhodzic is also available again following suspension. Midfielder Quentin Timber, however, remains sidelined with a knock.
With Villa flying under Emery and regarded as one of the tournament’s frontrunners, Robin Van Persie’s men face a huge test. But buoyed by their form at home, Feyenoord’s boss is hoping his side can make it an evening to remember.
