Ruben Amorim Defends Man Utd Player’s Impact in Europa League Clash
Ruben Amorim has heaped praise on a somewhat overlooked Manchester United player following their first-half performance against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals. The match took place at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, where United let slip a 2-1 lead late in the game, ultimately settling for a 2-2 draw.
Lyon got off to a flying start with Thiago Almada scoring from a free-kick in the first half, which came after a couple of missteps from Andre Onana. However, United responded with Leny Yoro finding the equalizer just before the first half ended.
In the second half, Joshua Zirkzee put Manchester United in front with a beautiful header, making it 2-1. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, their lead was short-lived as Rayan Cherki scored a vital equalizer in injury time for Lyon to make it 2:2.
Looking ahead, United will have the chance to turn things around at Old Trafford in the return leg on April 17, with kick-off scheduled for 8 pm UK time.
In his post-match comments, Amorim spoke about Rasmus Hojlund’s contributions during the game. Despite Manchester United’s bad form this season and only scoring eight goals in 42 appearances, Amorim chose to start Hojlund over Zirkzee. The Danish player played for 63 minutes before being substituted out of the game.
Manchester United head Coach figured out that Hojlund had some moments in the first half where he pushed the team forward, especially during tough stretches when United needed a boost. He emphasized that not only did Hojlund perform well, but Zirkzee also made a significant impact after coming on.
Even with the draw, Amorim remains cautious about their prospects of making it to the next round in the Europa League.
He acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, “I think it’s 50/50,” stressing the need for smart play in the upcoming home leg, where the support of their fans will be crucial.
