Sevilla Salvage Dramatic Draw in La Liga Battle with Elche

Sevilla needed a late equaliser from Gerard Fernández to avoid defeat as they drew 2-2 with Elche at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on their return from the international break.

The Andalusian side, who have made a stop-start beginning to the 2025/26 campaign, looked on course for victory after taking a first-half lead through Isaac Romero. But a chaotic second half saw Elche turn the game on its head before Sevilla struck late to salvage a point.

Romero opener cancelled out after the break

The home crowd had reason to cheer in the 28th minute when Romero fired in a superb finish to put Sevilla’s 1-0 ahead. Elche, however, created chances of their own before the interval and carried belief into the second half thanks to their unbeaten start to the season.

They got their reward just ten minutes after the restart when Andre Silva poked home from close range to make it 1-1.

Elche then looked set to complete a dramatic turnaround thanks to Rafa Mir — on loan from Sevilla’s — who bent a stunning free-kick into the top corner. It was the striker’s third goal since arriving at Elche and one that briefly silenced the home fans.

But Sevilla’s refused to fold. In the 84th minute, substitute Gerard Fernández reacted quickest inside the box, lashing home the loose ball to secure a point for Quique Sánchez Flores’ side.

The draw lifts Sevilla up to 11th place in La Liga, while Elche continue their impressive early-season form, moving into sixth with four games played.

What’s next?
