Tottenham Parts Ways with Three Players Shortly After Europa League Triumph

Posted on

Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced the release of three players, just under two weeks after their historic Europa League victory in Bilbao. Fraser Forster, Alfie Whiteman, and Sergio Reguilon will all depart the club at the end of their contracts this summer.

Furthermore, Timo Werner’s second loan stint in north London is coming to an end, and he will be rejoining his parent club, RB Leipzig. As they look to strengthen the team in preparation for a Champions League campaign in 2025–2026, this marks the start of Spurs’ summer operations. All four players were part of the celebrations on May 21 when manager Ange Postecoglou guided his team to a 1-0 triumph over Manchester United in the Europa League final. Brennan Johnson netted the solitary goal in a hard-fought match in Spain, ending the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy.Among the released players, only third-choice goalkeeper Whiteman featured in the squad. The 26-year-old has been with Tottenham since 2015 but made just one appearance, which came during the 2020/21 Europa League, where he took over from Joe Hart in the 82nd minute of a 4-0 win against Ludogorets Razgrad.

Fraser Forster concludes his three-year tenure in north London, having joined as a backup for Hugo Lloris in the 2022/23 season. However, due to Lloris’s struggles in his final season and Guglielmo Vicario’s injury this campaign, Forster made 34 appearances during his time with the club. Spanish left-back Reguilon arrived at Spurs from Real Madrid for £30 million in 2020. He had a strong start in his first two seasons but gradually lost his place in the lineup, leading to loan moves to Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, and Brentford. This season, he made six key appearances when injuries beset Postecoglou’s squad.

Former Chelsea forward Werner is another player leaving the club. After a successful loan spell at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, he was re-signed last summer. However, his impact this season has been less significant, resulting in some fan disappointment. This resulted in diminished playing time, and an injury ultimately sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

Furthermore, the club has confirmed that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s loan to Marseille has become a permanent transfer as anticipated, and centre-back Kevin Danso’s loan move from RC Lens is also now permanent. Tottenham next task is to scout for new arrivals as they prepare for a significant campaign, aiming for improvement in the Premier League while also challenging in the Champions League.
