Trai Hume says he wants to “keep making memories” with Sunderland after signing a new long-term contract that will keep him at the club until 2030. The Northern Ireland defender had attracted interest from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, but opted to remain with the Black Cats.
Trai Hume arrived from Linfield in January 2022 and was key to Sunderland’s promotion to the Championship that same season. Now 23, he has become an important figure in the squad, making 47 appearances and scoring three goals last season as Sunderland secured their Premier League return with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United in May’s play-off final at Wembley.
Although other clubs showed interest, Trai Hume — who has 19 caps and has captained Northern Ireland — was always determined to stay. “The club has believed in me through this new contract in the Premier League, which is where I want to be,” said Trai Hume, who has now played 123 times for Sunderland.
He added: “I joined Sunderland in League One just to play football — I wasn’t thinking about promotions or the Premier League. But this is a massive club that always brings opportunities. Climbing the divisions has happened quickly, and I’ve enjoyed every moment, so I’m delighted to extend my stay and keep making memories.”
Set to make his Premier League debut on Saturday against West Ham, Trai Hume recognises the challenge ahead after Sunderland’s eight-year absence from the top flight. “It’s going to be the toughest year of our lives in football” for those who’ve been part of the journey from League One, he said [Trai Hume].
