Transfer Blow for Man City as £40m Newcastle Roadblock Emerges Amid Liverpool Twist

As the summer transfer window approaches, Manchester City’s need for a right back has become increasingly apparent. Right back responsibilities have mostly fallen on Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes this season; while Lewis originally showed potential, his play has slowed, while Nunes has had trouble playing out of position. City is in a difficult position now that Kyle Walker has departed, going on loan to AC Milan; even if Milan exercises their option to purchase him, it is unlikely that he will return.

Consequently, Pep Guardiola faces a potential vacancy in a defense that has already been significantly affected by injuries throughout the campaign. Guardiola is eager to add a committed right back to improve consistency and performance, even though Manuel Akanji and Abdukodir Khusanov may fill in.

Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso is one player City is considering; his versatility as a flanker makes him an alluring option. Although Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento has attracted interest, it doesn’t appear likely that he will be purchased because the team is well-positioned to retain its best players as they get ready to qualify for the Champions League; they wouldn’t be under any pressure to sell, and Livramento would likely command a high price from the Magpies, who have had a significant impact since they signed him for £32 million in 2023.
Reports suggest that any inquiries from City for the 22-year-old are likely to be rebuffed, especially since he recently made his debut for the England national team, further elevating his market value. Even if City were to pursue Livramento, financial considerations could deter them; the club has other pressing areas in need of improvement, including a rumoured £100 million bid for Florian Wirtz. Given their recent expenses, which included £175 million for January’s new hires, they must prudently manage their finances.

Given that Guardiola’s tactical beliefs align with Livramento’s technical talent, athleticism, and ease with the ball, he would undoubtedly be a fantastic fit for City. Should both clubs show interest in Livramento or other right-back prospects, it could lead to an inflated transfer fee and a possible bidding war. It remains to be seen whether City and Liverpool will engage in competition for Livramento or any other right back this summer, but one thing is certain: Manchester City recognizes the need for substantial squad changes and must remain adaptable and decisive as they navigate the transfer market in the coming weeks. With a clear sense of urgency, the club is not poised to remain static.
