Alphonso Davies Returns to Bayern Bench After 9-Month Knee Injury Layoff

MUNICH — Alphonso Davies has made his long-awaited return to Bayern Munich’s matchday squad, marking a significant step in his recovery from the serious knee injury that sidelined him for nearly nine months.

The Canadian star is included in Bayern’s lineup for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon, though manager Vincent Kompany is expected to ease him back into action carefully. Josip Stanisic will start at left back, but Davies could see minutes from the bench as he continues his comeback.

Speaking on The Film Never Lies podcast on Monday, Alphonso Davies admitted that he’s uncertain about whether he’ll feature in the match.

“I’m not sure if I will get minutes,” he said. “I mean, that’s up to the coach.”

Alphonso Davies hasn’t played a competitive game since March, when he suffered a torn ligament and additional knee damage while representing Canada in a CONCACAF Nations League third-place match against the United States. The injury was a devastating blow for both club and country, depriving Bayern of their electrifying full-back at a crucial stage of last season.

The incident also sparked tension between Bayern Munich and the Canadian national team, with the German champions questioning the medical oversight of Davies’ injury.Bayern officials suggested that proper checks were not conducted before the player was allowed to travel back to Germany, delaying his treatment and rehabilitation process. Now, after months of recovery and conditioning, the 24-year-old is finally back in contention—bringing a major boost to a Bayern side that has struggled for consistency in Europe this season.

For Alphonso Davies, though, the focus is simple—getting back on the pitch after months of frustration and hard work. “It’s been a long road,” he said recently. “I’m just happy to be back with the team.”
