Alvaro Carreras Considered for Spain Call-Up Following €50M Madrid Move

Posted on

It has taken just five games in the new season for Alvaro Carreras to silence any doubts about his place in Real Madrid’s starting XI. Signed from Benfica for €50 million, the 22-year-old defender has wasted no time in cementing himself as Xabi Alonso’s undisputed first-choice left-back.

Madrid had initially tried to secure Alvaro Carreras before the FIFA Club World Cup, but Benfica refused to negotiate midway through their campaign. At that point, Fran García appeared ready to take his chance, impressing in the tournament and looking set for an extended run. However, Carreras’ arrival this summer has shifted the dynamic completely.

A Spain Call-Up on the Horizon?

Carreras’ rapid adaptation has not gone unnoticed at international level. According to MARCA, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente is monitoring his progress closely and could soon reward him with a senior call-up.

While Alvaro Carreras has nine caps for Spain’s Under-21s, he has never represented the senior side. His last youth appearance came in 2023, but his displays in Madrid’s famous white shirt may soon change that.

Breaking into La Roja’s setup will not be easy, however. De la Fuente currently relies on Marc Cucurella and Alejandro Grimaldo as his first-choice left-backs, with Barcelona’s highly rated Alejandro Balde also pushing for regular involvement. Carreras will need to maintain his current form and prove that his consistency matches his potential if he is to dislodge such established names.

Living Up to the Price Tag

When Madrid paid €50 million for Alvaro Carreras , questions were raised about whether the club had over-invested in a relatively unproven defender. Just weeks into the season, those doubts have evaporated. The young full-back has provided stability on the left flank while also adding thrust going forward, making him a perfect fit for Alonso’s system.

If he continues to shine, the step up to Spain’s senior national team feels more a matter of when than if.

From Benfica prospect to Real Madrid starter, Alvaro Carreras has wasted no time proving his worth. The next milestone could very well be wearing the red of Spain at senior level.
