Bayer Leverkusen has playfully told Liverpool to “make sure they keep laughing together” following the transfer of Florian Wirtz to Anfield, reuniting him with his former teammate Jeremie Frimpong. In Wirtz’s unveiling interview with Liverpool’s media team, he spoke warmly about Frimpong, sharing his positive memories of playing alongside him.
“I played, I think, three or four years with him,” Wirtz said of Frimpong. “He’s a really good player, a really good person, a really funny guy. Good for any changing room and also on the pitch, with big qualities to attack and defend. He was the first one who signed with Liverpool, and of course, he wanted me to join as well. But I think I made my decision on my own; it was maybe a small part that convinced me in the end.”
Wirtz expressed his excitement about joining Frimpong at Liverpool, noting, “I think it’s a really nice thing that we can play together again at a new club, at maybe a bigger club, and make the move together. I’m really looking forward to standing on the pitch with him again.”
Frimpong’s move to Liverpool was officially confirmed on Friday, a week after the Reds settled on a fee that could rise to £116 million ($157 million) for the German international. Wirtz’s move was announced three weeks after Frimpong’s transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool, prompting Bayer Leverkusen to send a heartwarming message about the duo’s friendship.
On social media platform X, Bayer Leverkusen shared a series of images featuring Frimpong and Wirtz during their time together at the Bundesliga club, captioned: “Inseparable. Make sure they keep laughing together.”
Wirtz also shared that Frimpong played a significant role in helping him improve his English. Frimpong, who speaks fluent English after moving to England at a young age, sat next to Wirtz in the changing room and encouraged him to communicate in English. “Yes, he (Frimpong) was my neighbor in the changing room,” Wirtz explained. “He sat directly next to me and I had to speak English with him. After I finished school, I didn’t speak really good English, but he was teaching me a lot and making me speak in more English and better English.”
Earlier this week, Frimpong shared a photo on social media with Wirtz, indicating they were on vacation together. Posting a picture of them on a boat, he wrote: “Vacation mode with my bro.”
