Carlos Baleba Targeted by Man United Amid Casemiro Exit Rumors and Mainoo’s Uncertain Status
Manchester United have not given up on signing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, despite the huge price tag placed on the Cameroon international.
Carlos Baleba was on United’s radar late in the summer transfer window, following the club’s successful pursuit of Benjamin Sesko. According to reports from Manchester Evening News (MEN Sport), the Red Devils were willing to wait until next summer before making a concrete move for the 21-year-old midfielder.
While Carlos Baleba was reportedly open to a transfer to Old Trafford, Brighton made it clear they would not entertain any offers below £100 million. That stance effectively ruled out a move this year, but United’s interest has not faded.
Brighton’s Stance on Baleba
Brighton owner Tony Bloom recently spoke about the situation, insisting the club never viewed it as a drawn-out saga.
“There was interest from Manchester United, and we said he wasn’t available this summer and they went away,” Bloom told The Argus.
“Carlos Baleba’s improvement has been immense. He’s massively important to this football club, and we’re delighted he’s with us for this season.”
Bloom’s comments suggest Brighton are open to discussions next summer, a timeline that aligns perfectly with United’s transfer strategy.
Will Champions League Football Be a Factor?
While the lack of Champions League football might complicate some deals, sources close to the player suggest that Baleba’s decision won’t hinge on that. The midfielder was reportedly willing to join United in August even without European competition.
Who Could Be Sold to Fund the Move?
If United miss out on Champions League revenue, they may have to sell key players. Bruno Fernandes continues to attract interest from Saudi Pro League clubs and could command a fee around £100m.
Alternatively, academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo could be sold, representing pure profit on the books. United manager Ruben Amorim has not always relied on Mainoo, which could make an exit possible.
Casemiro’s Future and the Long Game
Reports also suggest United could extend Casemiro’s contract if he accepts a reduced wage. Should that happen, the club might delay their pursuit of Baleba until 2027, when he enters the final year of his Brighton deal.
For now, United remain patient but persistent — and their admiration for Baleba is not going away anytime soon.
