Trump Claims He Kept Original 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Trophy

Posted on

There was a report that President Donald Trump had kept the original trophy after the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup concluded in the United States, forcing the English champion Chelsea F.C. to lift a copy. While national teams compete in the World Cup, the Club World Cup is an international competition that comprises soccer clubs from all around the world.

A post on X (archived) that shared this claim and labeled Trump’s action as “pathetic” garnered 867,500 views and 14,000 likes at the time of this writing. The rumor gained traction on X, as well as on Reddit and TikTok, prompting Snopes readers to seek verification on the matter.

Several news outlets echoed the claim, including The Guardian and The Independent, both prominent British publications. The rumor originated from comments Donald Trump made during a video interview with the British sports streaming platform DAZN. Given that Trump provided this information himself, it was confirmed that he indeed mentioned keeping the original trophy.

DAZN released a snippet of the interview on YouTube on July 14, 2025, a day after the final match. The exchange made it clear that the recording occurred while the final was happening on July 13, 2025.

In the interview, the reporter noted that the trophy was now at Trump Tower, to which Donald Trump replied that FIFA had gifted him the trophy:
“They said, ‘Could you hold this trophy for a little while?’ We put it in the Oval Office and then I said, ‘When are you going to pick up the trophy?’ He said, ‘We’re never going to pick it up. You can have it forever in the Oval Office. We’re making a new one.’ And they actually made a new one. So that was quite exciting.”

Trump did not confirm if he had shifted the trophy to Donald Trump Tower. We have reached out to the White House to inquire about the trophy’s current location and any plans Trump may have for it. Additionally, we have contacted FIFA to confirm if they indeed gifted the trophy to Trump. We will update this report if they respond.
