Donnarumma to Man Utd? Romano Reveals Major Twist in Chelsea Battle
Manchester United have successfully filled a number of positional gaps this summer, and their main area of interest was Donnarumma attacking. Manchester United have signed Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, who give manager Ruben Amorim a new-look front three.
Nonetheless, rumors have been rife regarding Andre Onana’s future between the sticks, with media reporting that the Red Devils are on the lookout for a future successor for the Cameroon international. One player who is frequently associated with United is Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is likely to say goodbye to the French capital this summer.
United and Chelsea were said to be interested, but it is not known if either club would make specific moves to sign the Italian goalkeeper. Chelsea’s position, however, has put United in an excellent position if they do want to pursue him.
Chelsea are not considering Donnarumma, Fabrizio Romano reveals. He wrote on X: “Chelsea are not in active talks to sign Gigio Donnarumma despite links. He’s not a target as Chelsea are happy with their goalkeepers.” The Blues appear to be set to retain number one goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, despite once being rumored to be replaced.
As the situation with Donnarumma unfolds, United are monitoring it closely, aiming to upgrade their goalkeeper position if a viable opportunity arises. Initially, competition from Chelsea seemed likely, but that appears to have dissipated. Although Donnarumma is, without doubt, one of the world’s leading keepers, Manchester United may decide to go for a young and relatively cheap solution. Among players who have, considerably, been associated with Manchester United, is Royal Antwerp’s Sanne Lammens. Information indicates that Manchester United want to sign this 23-year-old to challenge Onana for Amorim’s first choice in goal.
However, Lammens is reportedly interested in playing for a big club only if he’s guaranteed a first team position, as his number-one priority is being awarded plenty of playing time. His Antwerp contract runs through 2027, which makes it more likely that a move would be next summer when he’d only have one year left on his contract. However, Manchester United would probably entice the young goalkeeper with the prospect of playing for a big European club, probably paying him a much higher salary than he’s currently receiving. Ultimately, as Romano indicated, whatever route United elects to go through with their goalkeeper situation, it would be based upon their strategic moves ahead.
A £30m star is said to be ‘open’ to an Old Trafford departure this summer for a move to Serie A giants, with Manchester United ‘confident’ of agreeing a deal.
