Fresh Arrival at West Brom Reacts to First Days with the Team
West Brom defender George Campbell is quickly finding his feet, thanks in part to the camaraderie of fellow American Daryl Dike. The 24-year-old has just signed a four-year deal with the club after moving from CF Montreal.
“It’s always nice to see a fellow American,” Campbell said. “Even though Daryl and I hadn’t met before, there’s an instant connection. He’s been great in helping me feel settled in, and I’m looking forward to building that friendship. It’s something I hope will extend to all my new teammates. Daryl was one of the first to come up to me and say, ‘What’s up?’ I’m excited to get to know him and everyone else.”
Campbell also shared his respect for the club’s manager, Ryan Mason, whom he remembers watching during his playing days at Tottenham. “I had a good chat with him before I joined. He talked about his connection with Mauricio Pochettino, who is now managing the US Men’s National Team. It’s funny how small the football world can be. I did some research on West Brom and its players because I wanted to know what I was getting into. It’s thrilling to be here, especially remembering when I watched games as a kid, like when Romelu Lukaku played for the team.”
Reflecting on the transfer process, Campbell revealed he heard about a potential move a couple of months ago but only began to feel it might become a reality about two weeks back. “Once the opportunity presented itself, I knew I wanted to seize it. I’ve always wanted to experience football in Europe, and now I’m ready to dive in.”
Having recently completed half a season in the MLS, he believes this will give him an edge. “I’ve got that sharpness and fitness from playing regularly. Mentally, I’m in-season mode, which I think will help me adapt quickly to the coaching style and my teammates. I know it’s going to be a tough season ahead, and I have to be prepared for it. I’m looking forward to putting on the boots and getting started.”
When it comes to his style of play, Campbell described himself as brave on the ball, always looking to move it forward. “I want to be involved as much as possible, helping the team hold onto possession, create chances, and score goals. I take pride in not getting beaten in one-on-one situations and always being there for my teammates. I’m eager to bring a variety of skills to the table so we can all work together effectively.”
