Hansi Flick Disheartened by Barcelona Starter’s Exit, No Replacement in Sight

It could be argued by many people that Inigo Martinez’s exit from Barcelona came out of the blue, but for coach Hansi Flick, it is a bitter blow to the team’s aspirations for the forthcoming season. Last season, Martinez enjoyed the full confidence of coach Hansi Flick, who used him regularly as a central defensive anchor for the side alongside Pau Cubarsi. The two developed a good understanding, with Martinez providing excellent experience to the back line.

Late Thursday, it emerged that Martinez would be exiting the club on a free transfer to join the Saudi club, Al-Nassr. The development sees the Barcelona side save on Martinez’s wages to the tune of €14 million, but, because of the wage cap, the club could only utilize €8.4 million of the saved money to register new players on the wage bill. The financial predicament is another aspect of complexity in the equation.

Hansi Flick’s disappointment was palpable when he learned of Martinez’s departure. Although he had been forewarned, it didn’t soften the blow. The decision to start Gerard Martin as a central defender during their preseason tour was a strategic move, reflecting Hansi Flick’s need to adapt quickly to the unexpected loss. Even so, losing someone like Martinez, who had become a cornerstone of the team, is undoubtedly painful.

Martinez was no ordinary player, being left-footed and experienced, the perfect companion for Cubarsi and a natural on the field leader. Previously this season,  Hansi Flick had hailed Martinez for his maturity and professionalism as he adapted to the style of the team, considering him to be a shining example for the other players to look up to. Surprisingly, Barcelona has not signed a replacement for Martinez. Having options like Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia, Cubarsi, and now Martin to call upon, they feel they do not need anyone else for the backline right now. The choice to do this probably made them more comfortable releasing Martinez. Although they would not say no to any fresh opportunities on the horizon, it appears as though they feel they have sufficient depth for the moment, there.

It’s not an easy time for Barcelona or Hansi Flick, who will need to get through the new season without a player who contributed so heavily to the side last season.
