Newcastle United have confirmed David Hopkinson as their new chief executive officer, with Darren Eales stepping down from the role on September 5 for health reasons. Hopkinson, who previously served as Real Madrid’s Global Head of Partnerships from 2018 to 2020, now takes charge at St. James’ Park.

In his first words as CEO, Hopkinson expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead. “I am incredibly honoured to join Newcastle United at such an exciting time in the club’s history,” he said. “This club represents something truly special, with extraordinary history, heritage, and incredibly passionate supporters. Having worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest level of global sport. I admire what has been achieved already and am motivated by what lies ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world’s elite clubs.”

Hopkinson arrives with more than 30 years of top-level sports business experience. Aged 54, he began his career with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment in Canada, spending two decades with the company. During his tenure, he rose to Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial activities for two of the country’s biggest sports franchises: the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.

After his time in Canada, Hopkinson moved into European football with Real Madrid. From 2018 to 2020, he worked as the club’s Global Head of Partnerships, helping to drive commercial strategy at one of the most successful teams in world football. His experience in managing sponsorship and business growth at a club of Madrid’s stature is seen as highly valuable as Newcastle look to expand their global profile under ambitious ownership.

Hopkinson most recently played for Madison Square Garden Sports in the United States. He oversaw business operations for the New York Rangers in the NHL and the New York Knicks in the NBA while serving as President and Chief Operating Officer. Both franchises are among the most valuable in their respective leagues and play at Madison Square Garden, one of the most iconic sporting arenas in the world.

Hopkinson’s appointment signals Newcastle’s determination to strengthen their executive leadership at a time when the club is seeking to compete more consistently at the top level in England and Europe. With his experience across North America, Europe, and global football, he brings the kind of commercial expertise the Magpies believe will help drive their next phase of growth.
