Jackson Apologizes After Red Card in Chelsea’s Club World Cup Defeat
AP (Philippine): Following his expulsion during Friday’s Club World Cup match, where Chelsea suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Flamengo, Nicolas Jackson extended a heartfelt apology to the club’s fans.
The pivotal moment occurred in the 68th minute when Chelsea was down 2-1. Jackson, who had been brought onto the field only four minutes earlier as a substitute for Liam Delap, was sent off for a dangerous studs-up tackle on Flamengo’s Ayrton Lucas. This reckless challenge not only compromised Chelsea’s chances of staging a comeback but also left Jackson reflecting on the importance of maintaining composure in high-stakes situations. After the match, he expressed regret for his actions and acknowledged the disappointment of the supporters who stood by the team throughout the tournament.
In an emotional Instagram post, Jackson expressed, “I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. Another red card … and honestly, I’m so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team, not to put us in this situation.”
As a result of the red card, the Senegalese international will be unavailable for Chelsea’s upcoming match against Esperance on Tuesday, which is crucial for securing advancement to the round of 16.
Jackson previously earned a red card last month in Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle. Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca commented on the situation, noting, “It happened against Newcastle and it happened today. Probably today I am not 100 percent sure it’s a red card compared to the Newcastle one. In light of this, Nico is having a bit of a rough time right now.”
If FIFA decides to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the disputed tackle, which has alarmed both officials and supporters, it may consider imposing a more severe penalty on Jackson.
In the heartfelt conclusion of his reflective post, Jackson shared, “I will take this time to reflect on my actions, learn from this experience, and emerge even stronger not only for the badge I wear but also for everyone who has shown unwavering support and belief in me. I want to sincerely apologize to my teammates, the fans, and the entire football community. I am truly sorry. Truly sorry. Truly sorry.”
