Jamie Gittens to Chelsea: Club World Cup Involvement Unclear Post-Transfer

After weeks of speculation, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign Jamie Gittens.

Interestingly, Gittens will be in the same vicinity as his soon-to-be Chelsea teammates as Dortmund has also reached the last 16 and is slated to face Monterrey in Atlanta on Tuesday evening.

However, Gittens’s scenario presents certain difficulties because of FIFA restrictions as stated in Article 24.8. Jamie Gittens cannot play for Chelsea in the tournament because he is already registered with Dortmund, as per the rule that states no player may be on the final squad list of more than one club competing in the competition. Thus, he will travel to the United States to join his new Chelsea colleagues, but he will not be permitted to play until the team as a whole returns to England for preseason training.
