Joao Palhinha and Bryan Mbeumo on Man United’s Radar Amid Summer Overhaul

Posted on

Manchester United are strengthening their midfield this summer following Christian Eriksen’s departure. Joao Palhinha is currently having discussions about his future at Bayern after struggling to make a major impact during his first season at the Allianz Arena. Ruben Amorim has already brought in Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and he is also looking to add Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and a striker to his squad. Recently, the Red Devils have been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Hugo Ekitike.

With Eriksen leaving the club after his contract expired, United are actively seeking more midfield reinforcements. The Danish international made 35 appearances last season, scoring five goals and providing six assists. While there were talks of signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, the lack of Champions League football and Ederson’s significant price tag make that transfer unlikely. Therefore, Amorim will need to explore other options.

If Ederson is off the table, reports indicate that United are turning their attention to the Bundesliga for a potential Eriksen replacement. According to a GiveMeSport report, United are considering a loan deal for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha, who had previously spent a season in the Premier League with Fulham.

Last season, Joao Palhinha made 24 appearances for Vincent Kompany’s side, and United’s interest in him traces back to his time at Fulham from 2022 to 2024. The 29-year-old made 79 appearances for Marco Silva’s team, leading to Bayern’s £48m acquisition last summer.

Although his opportunities this season have been limited, he has still managed to impress. Former United defender Rio Ferdinand praised him on TNT Sports, stating, “He’s been absolutely sensational this season. You need someone like that in front of you as a defender.” While it’s not yet clear if Bayern would be willing to loan out Joao Palhinha, his limited appearances suggest a loan could be a viable option.

Additionally, Joao Palhinha and Ederson aren’t the only midfielders linked to a move to Old Trafford. Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney is another potential Eriksen replacement that United reportedly admire. One of the standout midfielders in the Championship last season, Hackney made 44 appearances for Middlesbrough under Michael Carrick, scoring five goals and providing three assists.

Tottenham, West Ham, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest are also reportedly interested in the 22-year-old. Middlesbrough has set a £20m price tag on Hackney, making him a more affordable option compared to Ederson, who comes at around £60m.
