Nick Woltemade’s ‘Woltemessi’ Moment Steals Spotlight in Germany Win

Newcastle United’s record signing Nick Woltemade was back in the spotlight on international duty this week, registering an assist as Germany secured a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland in Cologne.

The 23-year-old striker, who faced criticism following Germany’s surprise defeat to Slovakia earlier in the week, responded by playing a key role in his country’s opening goal. Pouncing on a loose ball, Nick Woltemade showed sharp awareness to slide a pass through to Serge Gnabry, who calmly slotted home to put the hosts in front.

That moment of quality drew particular praise from BILD, who cheekily dubbed it a “Woltemessi moment” for its quick thinking and incisive execution. “It was impressive how quickly he reacted before the early 1-0 and played the ball deep to Gnabry,” the outlet wrote. However, the review was not without criticism. BILD added that after his assist Woltemade “was too complicated in the penalty area” and questioned his composure in front of goal, ultimately grading his display a five on their scale.

Nick Woltemade lasted just over an hour before being substituted, with his overall impact limited despite the bright start. According to FotMob data, he created one chance – the assist for Gnabry – but failed to register a shot. He struggled in physical battles, winning only one of his five ground duels and just one of three aerial challenges. In total, he touched the ball only 16 times and lost possession on three occasions.

Still, the striker’s contribution to the crucial opening goal will offer some encouragement. For a Germany side that has endured inconsistency in recent years, moments of sharpness like Woltemade’s are exactly what coach Julian Nagelsmann is seeking as the team builds towards the 2026 World Cup.

From a Newcastle perspective, the game offered a glimpse of the talent they hope to unlock. Woltemade will now return to Tyneside ahead of a potential debut for Eddie Howe’s side against Wolves on Saturday. Howe has built a reputation for developing forwards, with Alexander Isak’s progress under his guidance a prime example.

Nick Woltemade, clearly still a work in progress, could benefit greatly from a similar environment. And with fellow new signing Yoane Wissa also joining the attacking ranks, Newcastle will be in no rush to pile immediate pressure on their big-money arrival.

For now, Nick Woltemade heads back to St James’ Park with his first international assist of the season in the bank – a small but promising step as he begins life in the Premier League.
