Raphinha Returns to Inspire Barcelona After Injury Layoff

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — From scoring goals to lifting spirits on and off the pitch, Raphinha is once again proving indispensable for Barcelona.

The Brazilian winger has returned from a six-week injury layoff in resurgent form, rediscovering the energy and edge that helped propel Barça to a domestic double and a Champions League semifinal run last season.

Since his comeback, Raphinha has registered a goal or assist in consecutive wins that have lifted Barcelona back to the top of La Liga, one point clear of rivals Real Madrid after 14 rounds.

Barcelona faces another stern test on Saturday when they visit Real Betis, who are unbeaten in eight matches across all competitions and full of confidence after a 2–0 Seville derby triumph over Sevilla. Manuel Pellegrini’s side, led by Anthony and Pablo Fornals, has climbed to fifth in the table.

Madrid, meanwhile, hosts Celta Vigo on Sunday looking to keep pace after easing pressure on coach Xabi Alonso with a 3–0 victory at Athletic Bilbao last weekend. But Los Blancos will be without both right-backs — Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal — as they battle injuries ahead of next week’s Champions League showdown with Manchester City.

For Barcelona, Raphinha’s influence continues to extend well beyond goals and assists. The 27-year-old scored the equaliser in Tuesday’s 3–1 comeback win over Atlético Madrid and led the team’s aggressive press that turned the game in their favour.

His leadership was also on display in last weekend’s victory over Alavés, where he was seen consoling coach Hansi Flick after a tense finish that saw two red cards issued to Barça’s bench. Flick later dismissed suggestions of frustration, instead praising his winger’s attitude and drive.

“Our relationship is very good,” Flick said on Friday. “Rafa is a very important player for us — he sets the tone for our pressing and brings great energy. He’s fantastic for the team.”

Raphinha admitted his vocal approach can sometimes test his teammates but insists it’s part of his character.

“I can be a pain sometimes,” he smiled, “but I think it’s important. I ask a lot from those who I know can give more.”

Barcelona will be without Dani Olmo, who injured his shoulder against Atlético, while defender Eric García has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2031.
