Ruben Loftus-Cheek Returns to England Squad in Tuchel’s Bold Selection
Ruben Loftus-Cheek was recalled to the England team after a hiatus since 2018.
He was chosen into the squad for the upcoming internationals against Andorra and Serbia by The Athletic.
It comes after Adam Wharton suffering an adductor injury during a match against Aston Villa on Sunday while playing for Crystal Palace.
Wharton hobbled out in the second half of the 3-0 victory at Villa Park andmanager Oliver Glasner insisted the star has to withdraw from the England camp.
That has given a chance to Ruben Loftus-Cheek who last featured in November 2018 while facing United States.
The ex-Chelsea man has started the season in good nick with the Rossoneri and netted in Friday night’s 2-0 triumph at Lecce.
The 29-year-old has made 10 appearances for England and will be reuniting with boss Thomas Tuchel who he worked alongside during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek left Chelsea to join AC Milan in early 2022 after Tuchel’s dismissal.
Aside from injuries, the midfielder has been a regular in Serie A titans’ team since his arrival having featured in 71 matches.
He has started both of Milan’s opening games this season under new man Massimiliano Allegri.
And he could be set to add to his 10 appearances when England host minnows Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday.
He will be in selection consideration too when Three Lions journey to Serbia a further three days later in a potentially toughest task in World Cup qualification.
Tuchel was in the news recently following his decision to bench Real Madrid sensation Trent Alexander-Arnold to make way for Tottenham’s Djed Spence. Loftus Cheek could ideally combine with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson in England’s middle this season following his maiden call into England’s senior team.
These two could be aided by Cole Palmer’s, Bukayo Saka’s and Jude Bellingham’s injuries.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek could not cement his status in Chelsea’s central midfielder position thus loan moves to Crystal Palace and Fulham.
He relocated from west London to Milan in 2023 and has become at ease in Italy since.
“I didn’t play as frequently as I desired at Chelsea and I was out on the field in positions where I could not have free rein. It was a difficult season,” he was reported in Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I have a free mind and I play as a midfielder because I like,” he admitted reflecting on his position at the San Siro. “It’s going back to a childhood where we used to playfootball without a worry.”
“That’s the mentality I’d want to get out onto a field with. On a field, I want to have a good time, have a good game, and a good grinding time.”
“If you feel free, then you play your best football. And if the whole team feels like this, then you can achieve wonderful things.”
